It’s possible that U.K. operatives are trying to take out fangirls around the world by exporting recent shows with some of the isle’s fittest lads: “Robin Hood” Jonas Armstrong, “Merlin” and Arthur Colin Morgan and Bradley James and “Primeval” dinosaur geek Andrew-Lee Potts.

Merlin’s second season has seen Bradley James’s Prince Arthur begin to question some of the decisions made by his father, King Uther, played by genre veteran Anthony Head. Taking a break from filming their climactic fight sequence in the eighth episode, Sins of the Father, the affection between the two is evident – even if, as Head points out, they’ll shortly “need to get back to beating each other into a pulp…” Words: Paul Simpson

This fight scene has taken nearly a whole day to film – is it usual to spend such a long time on a single scene?
Anthony Head: We’re covering the whole room, so it takes a while to relight. Each section we have to shoot both ways. We’re looking at both sides of the chamber, and from both ends.

Bradley James: Normally the fighting’s outdoors as well, so the camerawork isn’t as difficult. Here, the set is prohibiting.

Merlin will return to BBC One next year for a third series, it has been announced.

The fantasy series, which stars Colin Morgan as a young mythical wizard, has been a Saturday night ratings success since its debut in 2008.

BBC controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson said of the show: “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

The second series of Merlin launched earlier this year to a healthy 5.08 million viewers for BBC One and since averaged 5.15 million over its 10-episode run.

How does he get them together?

“Alined gets his jester, Trickler, to put a spell on Arthur to make sure he fancies this hot princess. For insurance, he puts the spell on both of them and they fall head over heels for each other. That’s when it all starts to happen!”

So it’s up to Merlin to help?

“Yes, it’s all down to Merlin again to save the day. It’s not in the usual spell way – it’s more about using his head!”

What about poor Gwen?

“They’re not an item but there’s a covert understanding between them and lingering looks. They’re very fond of each other. I think it’s a surprise for her. There aren’t many women in Camelot and she’s had no competition before.”

Sorry for no updates I was moving house, Merlin caps will be up soon.

Angel & Bradley were featured in OK Magazine. If anyone has scans please send them in!

I have added magazine scans, full credit to Bradley James Fan.

How are things shaping up between your characters Arthur and Gwen? Any signs of a simmering romance yet?
Bradley: Arthur’s started to realise that Gwen exists in this series. The problem is, the way the show was initially set up makes it very difficult to believe that Arthur would suddenly start wooing Guinevere. In the legends, Arthur sees Guinevere and instantly falls in love. We’ve not gone for that approach at all – he’s hardly noticed her! So I guess it’s more about developing the attractions to the inner character, which is a gradual process, and more of a build-up.

Angel: When Gwen joined, she was very keen on Merlin, but that’s kind of fizzled out. She does seem to like the boys, though! In this series, she gradually sees that Arthur has a good heart, and she believes she can help nurture that in him, so she stands up to him a bit more, and I think that impresses him. So just watch this space!

Camelot’s jousting tournament is fast approaching and Arthur is determined to win it on his own merit, despite suspecting that the knights are letting him win because he is the prince, as the magical family drama continues.

With the help of Merlin and Gwen he goes undercover, taking lodgings at Gwen’s house while the tournament is on. But Arthur is in for a shock when Gwen challenges him to give up his spoilt, lofty ways. Will he be able to shake the habits of a lifetime as easily as he did his princely robes, and why does he care so much what Gwen thinks anyway?

“I finished drama school in July of 2007,” James recalled in a recent phone interview. “And by January, February of 2008, I had been cast in ‘Merlin.’ I consider myself extremely fortunate to have landed a job like this straight out of school.”

“Mind you, my friends were a little weirded out by this situation,” he continued. “They found it extremely odd to see me on TV every Saturday night. But they’ve since calmed down and realize that I’m still the same old Bradley, that guy who tells those awful jokes.”

“So unless I go out strolling in my chainmail, people just don’t make the connection,” Bradley laughed. “Which means that I still get to have a private life.”

Since you are filming so far ahead, I don’t know what you can tease, but can you tell us anything about the rest of series one and a bit about series two?

Well, I think a key moment for Arthur in the next series is…well, hang on…let me check on this. I don’t want to get my wrist slapped. [he laughed as he checked in with his publicist] OK…basically, Arthur…I think there’s a large bit of mystery cast in the first series about Arthur’s birth. An in the second series, events cause a big sort of uprising in the knowledge and what happened in that situation. So there’s that to sort of really dig into.

I’m assuming that means that Nimueh (Michelle Ryan) will be back…

Um, well, that’s definitely something I couldn’t tell you. [laughs] I know for a fact that I couldn’t tell you that. It certainly has sorcery involved. And she is a part of the situation.
